Meet the medical professionals who are ready to serve you at Lynchburg Pulmonary:

Michael G. Milam, MD

Dr. Milam trained at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina before coming to Lynchburg in 1988. He serves as Centra’s medical director for sleep disorders and is past president of the Virginia Thoracic Society. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, sleep medicine and critical care and is experienced in clinical research. He is currently the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Centra and the Medical Director of the Respiratory Therapy Department at Central Virginia Community College and Liberty University.

 

Albert M. Baker, MD

Dr. Baker earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Virginia before graduating from medical school there in 1989. He completed a residency in internal medicine with a primary care focus at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in Richmond and then a fellowship in pulmonary diseases and critical care at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care, he has practiced in Lynchburg, Virginia since 1995. A Certified Physician Executive, he has served as the medical director for critical care and for pulmonary rehabilitation. He served on the board of directors of Centra for 18 years, chairing  its committee governing patient care quality and safety. He is an experienced clinical trialist in the fields of asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, pneumonia, and thromboembolic disease.

 

Joseph B. Khoury, MD

Dr. Khoury joined Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates in 2000 after completing a fellowship in Pulmonary Diseases, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Duke University. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary diseases, and critical care. He is the first physician to serve our area as a board certified specialist in Sleep Medicine and he has a particular interest in sleep disorders. He serves as the medical director of pharmacy and therapeutics for Centra.

 

 

John F. Plankeel, MD

Dr. Plankeel joined Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates in 2003 after completing residency and fellowship training in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He maintains board certification in internal medicine, pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. He specializes in all aspects of pulmonary and sleep disorders. Dr. Plankeel has a particular interest in caring for patients with pulmonary hypertension and runs a weekly clinic focusing on the evaluation and treatment of patients with this complex condition.

 

 

Kristopher Ardt, MD

Dr. Arndt completed his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Toledo. A native of Ohio, he specialized as a chemist and worked on research to optimize hydrogen fuel cells and to sequence a gene common to many cancer cell lines. He is a skilled clinician, experienced in all aspects of pulmonary and critical care.

 

 

 

Jennifer H. Tice, MSN, ACNP

Jennifer joined Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates in 2012 after completing a Master of Science at Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a board certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the Neurological Intensive Care Unit at Lynchburg General Hospital for seven years before completing her Master’s degree.  She works in the pulmonary, pulmonary hypertension and sleep clinics and rounds on pulmonary and critical care patients at Lynchburg General Hospital. She has a special interest in pulmonary hypertension, neurosciences, and critical care.


Brooke McNamara, DMSc, PA-C

Brooke McNamara joined Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates in November 2017, initially for her doctoral clinical fellowship, allowing her to receive additional medical training in both pulmonary and sleep medicine , and continued with the practice after the completion of her fellowship. She  completed her Masters of PA Medicine and Doctorate of Medical Science degrees from University of Lynchburg. She works in the outpatient and inpatient settings in both pulmonary and sleep medicine, and has worked diligently to initiate an inpatient sleep medicine consultation service at our affiliated hospital. She holds certification in Fundamentals of Critical Care (FCCS). She is actively involved in the American Academy of Physician Assistants, holding a position in the Title Change Investigation Council. She enjoys all aspects of pulmonary and sleep medicine.

 

Rebecca Ferguson, DMSc, PA-C

Rebecca Ferguson is a native to the Lynchburg area and joined LPA in 2020.  She completed her Masters of PA Medicine and Doctorate of Medical Science degrees from University of Lynchburg. She spent the first few years of her career practicing at a local Urgent Care enjoying the diversity of general medicine. She now works in the pulmonary and sleep clinics and rounds on pulmonary, critical care and sleep patients at Lynchburg General Hospital. She has a special interest in COPD, Asthma and Sleep.

 

 


Jamie Williams, RN, MSN, FNP-C

Jamie joined Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates in 2021 after completing her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at South University. She previously worked as a critical care nurse in the Medical and Covid Intensive Care Units at Lynchburg General Hospital and has nine years of nursing experience. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology at West Virginia University and then obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Wheeling University. She has a special interest in Asthma, COPD and Sleep Medicine.

 

Alex Lower, PA, DMSc

Alex is originally from Waldorf, Maryland.  He graduated
summa cum laude from Liberty University with a degree
in Public Health before working as a project manager for
the medical scribes in cardiology and primary care
practices in Lynchburg.  In 2021 he graduated from the
Master of PA Medicine program at the University of
Lynchburg and recently completed a one-year fellowship
in emergency medicine do complete his work for the
Doctor of Medical Science degree. He has experience in
research, enjoys teaching, and is active in professional
societies in his field.
